You're not tied in forever.

After 12 months you can switch at any time. If your insurer raises its contribution, you even have a special right of termination.

Why comparing pays off

Same salary, more take-home pay – right from the start.

All health insurers charge their own additional contribution – on top of the uniform rate of 14.6%. You pay half of it yourself. In 2026 the range between the cheapest and the most expensive insurer is around 2.2 percentage points – although not every insurer can be chosen in every federal state. If you choose the cheaper insurer from the start, you'll have more take-home pay on the same gross salary – without a pay rise.

School → start of apprenticeship

When you start a paid dual apprenticeship (vocational training), family insurance through your parents (Familienversicherung) ends automatically – regardless of how much you earn. Typical apprenticeship pay in the 1st year: approx. €1,100 gross/month (source: BIBB 2025/2026).

University → first job

While you're studying, the contribution is around €146 a month at all insurers (as of 2026) – almost uniform. This is where the benefits comparison is especially worthwhile: which insurer offers better apps, bonus programmes, subsidies? After graduating, with your first job and a typical starting salary of approx. €3,200 gross/month, the contribution comes into play too.

Employee's share (50% of the contribution difference). Actual savings depend on the additional contribution of the insurer chosen. In 2026 the range between the cheapest and the most expensive insurer is around 2.2 percentage points (2.18% to 4.39%, source: list of health insurers published by the GKV-Spitzenverband, the national association of statutory health insurers). Not every insurer can be chosen in every federal state – among insurers available nationwide the range is around 1.9 percentage points.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about your first own insurer

Do I have to take out my own insurance now?
That depends on the type of training. With a paid dual apprenticeship, the free family insurance through your parents ends automatically on your first day of training – you are then compulsorily insured in your own right. With purely school-based training without pay (e.g. social care assistant, nursery teacher), you can stay in family insurance until the age of 25. After university: the low-cost student insurance ends when you deregister from university or at the latest at the end of the semester – if you then start working, you are insured through your employer and need your own insurer.
Which insurer is best for people starting their career?
That depends on your income, your federal state and the benefits you want. There is no universally best insurer – but our comparison shows you free of charge which one is cheapest and best suited to your individual situation.
How long am I tied to the insurer I choose?
At least 12 months. After that you can switch at any time. If your insurer raises its additional contribution, you even have a special right of termination and can switch earlier.
Are the benefits the same at all insurers?
The statutory basic benefits – such as doctor's visits, medication, hospital stays – are identical at all insurers. Differences exist only in voluntary extra benefits such as bonus programmes, teeth cleaning, osteopathy or the quality of the app and customer service.
What happens if I don't submit an application?
Your training company will then automatically register you with the insurer you were previously family-insured with – i.e. your parents' insurer. That isn't necessarily the cheapest. For graduates: if you don't actively choose, your employer will ask for the membership certificate – and without it they can't submit the social security registration correctly. In both cases: if you compare and choose yourself now, you start with the cheapest insurer from the outset.
By when do I need to have chosen an insurer?
As early as possible – ideally before your first day of training or work. For apprentices: if you don't register with an insurer within 14 days of starting your apprenticeship at the latest, you'll automatically be insured with the insurer that provided your previous family insurance – which isn't necessarily the cheapest. For graduates starting their first job: your employer needs the membership certificate for the social security registration and often asks for it as early as when you sign your contract.
What do I need to register with a health insurer?
Usually your ID card and your social security number are enough. The social security number is on your social security card (Sozialversicherungsausweis) – if you can't find it, you've probably never received one and can simply apply for it from the Deutsche Rentenversicherung (German pension insurance; free of charge, online). Some insurers also ask for an IBAN for contribution refunds.
