What holds many people back – and why it's no reason
“Too much hassle”
Your new insurer does everything for you.

You submit the online application – done. Your new insurer cancels with your previous insurer and automatically sends your employer the electronic membership certificate. You just need to briefly and informally let your employer know – no public office, no fax, no paperwork.

“I'll lose benefits”
Basic benefits are identical at all insurers.

Doctor's visits, medication, hospital – that's regulated by law and the same at all insurers. What differs: the additional contribution and voluntary extras, which you see directly in the comparison.

“The difference is tiny anyway”
Not if you earn a good income.

The difference between the cheapest and the most expensive insurer is around 2.2 percentage points. With €5,000 gross, just 2 percentage points add up to €600* a year. You'll see the exact amount for your income below.

What you actually save

Same gross. More take-home pay.

The additional contribution is split equally between you and your employer. The higher your income, the more euros a percentage point of difference makes. The table shows your share – depending on how big the difference to your current insurer is.

Frequently asked questions

What you should know before you switch

Will I lose benefits if I switch?
No. The statutory mandatory benefits – doctor's visits, medication, hospital stays, sickness benefit (Krankengeld) – are identical at all statutory health insurers. These mandatory benefits are regulated by law and cannot be restricted by any insurer. The only differences are voluntary extra benefits such as subsidies for osteopathy, teeth cleaning or bonus programmes – and you see those directly in the comparison.
How much do I actually save?
That depends on your gross income and the additional contribution of your current insurer. As a guide: with €5,000 gross and a 2-percentage-point difference, that's up to €600 a year – or €50 more take-home pay per month, without a pay rise. The calculator above shows you the actual comparison for your income.
Do I have to cancel myself?
No. You simply submit the online application to your new insurer. It handles the cancellation with your previous insurer and automatically sends your employer the electronic membership certificate. You just need to briefly and informally let your employer know – that's all you have to do.
When can I switch?
You can switch after at least 12 months of membership. The cancellation takes effect at the end of the second following calendar month – if you apply in April, you switch on 1 July. If your insurer has raised its additional contribution, you can cancel up to the end of the month for which the higher contribution first applies; in that case, too, the switch takes effect at the end of the second following calendar month. After switching, a new 12-month minimum membership period applies.
What is the additional contribution and why does it vary?
On top of the uniform statutory contribution rate of 14.6%, each insurer charges its own insurer-specific additional contribution. You pay half of it yourself, your employer pays the other half. The official average for 2026 is 2.9% (§ 242a SGB V); in fact, at the end of June 2026 insurers charged around 3.13% on average. The range between the cheapest and the most expensive insurer is around 2.2 percentage points. Why the difference? Insurers calculate differently and have different reserves and member structures.
Can I switch even if I have pre-existing conditions?
Yes, without restriction. All statutory health insurers open nationwide are legally obliged to accept members – they may not reject anyone – regardless of pre-existing conditions, how old you are or how much you earn. There is no health check and no waiting period.
What does the comparison cost?
Nothing. The comparison is 100% free and non-binding. Using the calculator creates no obligation whatsoever.
