Long-term care insurance 2027: surcharge for the childless to rise to 0.9 percentage points
People without children are to pay more for long-term care insurance from 2027: on 30 September 2026 the federal cabinet adopted the draft of a care reform. According to it, the surcharge for people without children is to rise from 0.6 to 0.9 percentage points from 1 January 2027. People without children would then pay 4.5 % instead of 4.2 %; for parents the rate stays at 3.6 %. The surcharge is paid by the childless alone; the employer does not contribute to it.
What this means in euros (surcharge only, without children, per month): at €3,000 gross €9 more, at €4,000 €12 more, at €5,000 €15 more. The draft also provides for raising the contribution ceiling in long-term care insurance by €300 a month – for high incomes even more is added.
Not yet adopted: the Bundestag and Bundesrat still have to approve the law; the amounts may change until then. The long-term care contribution is the same at every insurer – you can only save on the health insurer's additional contribution.
