Key facts
Contribution assessment ceiling for health insurance 2027: what changes?
The ceiling rises to €6,375
You pay health insurance contributions on your gross salary up to this amount per month (€76,500 per year), but not above it. In 2026 the contribution assessment ceiling (BBG) is €5,812.50 per month or €69,750 per year. That means €562.50 more salary subject to contributions.
Around €50 more per month
If you earn €6,375 or more, as an employee you pay €47 to €53 more per month – depending on your insurer's additional contribution. Your employer pays the same amount again.
Below €5,812.50 nothing changes
If your salary is below the old ceiling, it has always been fully subject to contributions. The new ceiling then does not affect you.

Background
Why is the contribution assessment ceiling rising so sharply in 2027?
Normally the ceiling follows wage growth – most recently around 4 % a year. For 2027 the legislator has decided on a special increase: with the GKV contribution stabilisation act the ceiling rises by almost 10 %. This brings in more money from higher incomes so that the average additional contribution can stay stable for everyone.
Compulsory insurance threshold 2027
€84,150 per year (€7,012.50 per month). Employees earning more can take out private insurance. More on our page Private health & supplementary cover.
Pension and unemployment insurance
The ceiling rises here too: in 2027 to €8,850 per month (€106,200 per year).
How binding is this?
The federal government adopted these figures on 7 October 2026. The Bundesrat still has to approve the regulation – usually a formality. We will update this page as soon as it has done so.
