The insurers shown are a selection of common examples. Depending on your details, the comparison may show additional or different health insurers. Note: “AOK” is not a single insurer but a group of 11 separate regional insurers – which one you can choose depends on where you live or work. Some company health insurers (Betriebskrankenkassen, e.g. BKK firmus, Bosch BKK) can also only be chosen in certain federal states.

Contribution & savings

How much can you save?

Statutory health insurers differ in their additional contribution. Depending on your income, the difference between the cheapest and the most expensive insurer can amount to several hundred euros a year.

A comparison is particularly worthwhile if your insurer has raised its contribution, if you haven't switched for years, or if certain extra benefits matter to you.

Your new insurer handles the cancellation – you don't have to take care of anything.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about switching

Does my health insurer have to inform me about a contribution increase?
No, not any more. Since 30 July 2026 the former duty to notify no longer applies: your insurer no longer has to write to you separately when it raises its additional contribution. The special right of termination (Sonderkündigungsrecht) still exists – but you have to notice the increase yourself. The GKV-Spitzenverband (the national association of statutory health insurers) publishes the current additional contributions of all insurers in a daily updated list.
Can I switch at any time?
You can switch once you have been insured with your current insurer for at least 12 months. If your insurer raises its additional contribution, you can cancel without the 12-month commitment – up to the end of the month for which the higher contribution first applies. You'll find all deadlines and the exact process in our guide →
How much can I save?
Depending on income and the insurers' additional contributions, members can save several hundred euros a year. With a gross income of €5,000 a month, the difference can be up to €600 a year – depending on how far the current insurer is from the cheapest provider.*
Will my benefits stay the same?
The statutory basic benefits are identical at all health insurers – you lose nothing. Differences exist only in voluntary extra benefits, such as osteopathy, professional teeth cleaning, bonus programmes, contribution refunds, acupuncture or subsidies for alternative practitioners (Heilpraktiker). Our benefits comparison shows what the cheapest insurers actually offer →
How does switching work?
You can apply to switch online in just a few minutes. Your new health insurer handles the cancellation with your previous insurer. You briefly tell your employer about your new insurer yourself – the membership certificate is then sent electronically.
Do I have to cancel my old insurer myself?
No. Your new health insurer automatically handles the cancellation with your previous insurer – you don't have to take care of anything. You just briefly inform your employer about your new insurer yourself.
How high is the additional contribution in 2026?
The additional contribution (Zusatzbeitrag) is a surcharge set individually by each statutory health insurer on top of the uniform contribution rate of 14.6%. It is split equally between employee and employer. The official average for 2026 is 2.9% (§ 242a SGB V); in fact, at the end of June 2026 insurers charged around 3.13% on average. The range between the cheapest and the most expensive insurer is around 2.2 percentage points. Everything about the 2026 additional contribution in our guide →
Can switching health insurer increase my take-home pay?
Yes – and without a pay rise. A lower additional contribution directly reduces your monthly contribution deduction and so increases your net income. With €3,000 gross and a 1% difference, that's around €15 more net pay per month – or €180 a year. The net pay table shows how much you can actually save →
Does the comparison cost anything?
No. The comparison is 100% free and non-binding. Using the calculator creates no obligation whatsoever.
How do you make money if the comparison is free?
As a licensed insurance broker, we may receive remuneration if a switch of health insurer comes about through our brokerage. This remuneration is paid by the receiving health insurer – not by you. You incur no additional costs whatsoever. The exact type of remuneration is disclosed in our initial information.
